[Big Hero 6 ] Baymax

Baymax

Baymax is approximately 1.3cm tall sitting in his own glass bottle.
Height of bottle is 4cm including the cork, and 2cm in diameter.

I thought the combination of colours were a bland, so I wrapped some red twine around the neck of the bottle.

Just something I quickly made for the sake of an update heh.

(Requests are always open btw.. it seems like I’m just not inspired by anything to make craft lately)

[Tutorial] GotG: Baby Groot

Hello hello,,

So here is something I’ve been working on ever since the movie: Guardians of the Galaxy came out.

Groot was such an adorable character, and his baby form even more so :)

Since it was released during the semester, he’s been something I’ve been working on, on and off for a long time.
I finally finished making him about a month ago, and haven’t really been bothered to take photos – until today.

The weather has been pretty terrible in NZ lately, but today seems to be one of those nice cloudless days – which is a nice break from the dark clouds.

As for the process of making him, I admit I’ve been lazy lately in documenting my progress.
Since I do work on-and-off, most of the times, I just don’t bother taking images.

Although, the process isn’t too complicated, so I hope you’ll be able to get the general idea of how I made him.

As usual, remember to have HEAPS of reference images to help you make him as accurate as possible.

Final Baby Groot

Materials

Paints

Acrylic Paints in:

  • Black
  • White
  • Yellow (Lemon yellow)
  • Green (Sap green)
  • Yellow Ochre (Pebeo, Studio Acrylics #27)
  • Raw Sienna (Pebeo Studio Acrylics #36)

Materials

  • Wire
  • Aluminium foil
  • Super sculpey
  • Small pot plant
  • Airdry clay of choice
  • Glaze (Ideally, Matte)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black half pearls (for the eyes)

——-

Creating Base

  • Create an oval shape with the foil
  • Take wire and fold it over itself, stab the bottom ends (assuming the “rounded part” is at the top) through the middle of the foil
  • Take each end of the wires and bend it down and around the foil to hold the “head” in place
  • Twist the ends around the middle of the wire (you can kind of see it in the first image)
  • Take the clay and wrap it around the foil and bake
  • As you can see, I burnt it… but no matter. To make his head more angular, I added more clay and shaped it as seen above.

Base shape of head

  • Made his head more round
  • Added a strip down the middle as his “nose”
  • Placed the two half pearls in, as reference for his eyes

Adding head details

  • Added a bit more clay to the top of his head
  • Rolled out pieces of clay, and “squished” the ends down (this is to help me blend it into his head easier, so I don’t apply to much pressures and alter his head shape)
  • Add as many of those branches as you want
  • I started using my needle tool to add those details on his face

More or less completed head

  • Here is his head almost completed

Completed head

  • Added more cheek bones
  • Brow bones
  • and more clay down the middle

Different angle of his head

  • Here is his head about completed at this point.
  • Just added some “vines” to the branches at the top
  • Bake without the eyes

So at this point is where I skipped a whole bunch of steps in the images.
I’ll list here what I did in between the top and bottom image:

  • Took some more wire and positioned across the body
  • Added some foil to the body
  • Covered whole body in clay

Remember: You’ll be adding the “root” details after, so the base of the body should be smaller than what you intend the final body size to look like.

Adding roots to body

  • At this point, you just roll out bits of clay and place it on the body. The pattern is entirely up to you
  • I tried to add some variation by changing the width of the “roots”, and also changing the direction of how they grew. I also tried to “layer” them a bit, so it looks like some are coming from underneath others.
  • I also followed the direction of the arms

Most completed body

  • Here he is baked

With eyes

  • And here is what he looks like once his eyes are placed back in.

At this point, I was almost going to just leave him with no hands…. but then.. I added them in anyways.

There was some difficulty, because in the actual movie, his hands are like thin tiny branches, and that was just too hard for me, so I made them bigger.

And another skip in the the whole image process:

  • Added arms
  • Painted him
  • Hot glued his eyes on
  • Painted the pot plant to black and white
  • Filled the pot plant with airdry clay and placed Baby Groot inside.
  • Once the airdry clay fully dried, I got glued Groot into the indent I made earlier, and then poured in a whole layer of Triple Thick glaze, to really seal him in.

Completed

As for the paint:

  • Mix: Brown + Black and use a thin brush to paint inside the grooves in Groots’ face + in between the roots on his body . This is for definition
  • Darker brown where his eyes are for some “shading”
  • Mix: Green + Ochre + yellow and use this dull green to paint the tips of his fingers and tops of his head + dab some on the roots on his body
  • Groot’s body was a mix of the Ochre + Sienna + Black + White

But to be honest, since I don’t really know how to paint things and shade or whatever, I just did anything ahahahah.

It really is up to you how you decide to paint him.

And there you are.

I hope you enjoyed this post, and I’m working on some more crafts so I hope I can post a little bit more.

Whoa there

Longgg time no post right ?

Apparently, my last post was about March.. so over 6 months ago…

So much for posting every one or so right ?

—-

Actually looking back through my older entries, I feel like I should mass edit them all.
Just cringing at my usage of ” ^^” ” TT___TT” and the sort..

Mm.

But whatever.

Anyways, just a little post about me finally being on holiday !!
It’s finally here, from now till about… March 2015 ?
I’m on holiday… ahh yisss..

And also, I have actually been crafting here and there – just largely unfinished things.
I still have a whole lot of sculptures I haven’t gotten around to properly paint / glaze.
To be honest though, I’m not sure I want to finish those..

—-

But what I DID finish, was a new portal gun !
As usual , it was for a friends’ birthday, and as usual, I just winged my way through the sculpting process so yep.
Didn’t even manage to take a whole bunch of images of it either.

Can I add though, out of all the Portal Guns I’ve made, (about 3-4), this one is the most accurate.
Since it was a gift, I actually had to think carefully the order I would make/bake/paint the pieces in, and how each part will be made.

Also, as usual, I rushed it till the last moment, almost screwed it up several times AND was late to the party because I was so desperate to finish it off… Hmm..

—-

But without any further ado, here are some TERRIBLE images I took right before I left.
I wish I had some better lighting, and area to take the photos in – but really, there wasn’t time.
There are the ones that didn’t suck too much as well haha, enjoy.

Final

Here is what it looks like completed.
I bought a case that is specifically for those little models / figurines and placed the portal gun in it.
I also quickly made a stand last minute for it.

Apparently a “Portal Gun stand” exists…. I can’t believe I didn’t google it earlier because I had so much time when I was waiting for paint to dry.
The stand I made here was a mixture of that stand and some improvisation.

If I remember correctly, the gun measures about 7cm across.
Made with :

  • Super sculpey
  • Acrylic paint
  • Glaze
  • Wire
  • Hot glue
  • Clear plastic

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, here’s the general outline of how I made the gun.

  • Make two tubes out of clay, cut the middles out of both of them, and place one in the other
  • Make the front part which is for the shooting by stacking different sized circle clays
  • Roll out blue clay into a log and place it into the body of the gun
  • Bake
  • Sculpt the back part of the gun
  • Bake separately
  • Make the front white bit of the gun
  • Bake separately
  • Paint the main body of the gun black
  • Paint the insides of the white bits
  • Get some clear plastic, glue it over the main body of the gun where the middle was cut out of
  • Attach both the white bits onto the body of the gun with hot glue
  • Shape some wire
  • Glue onto the white bits of the gun, and just according to what it looks like
  • Paint several smooth coats of paint over the white bits
  • Shape some wire and glue them at the front of the gun
  • Paint over the hot glue
  • Glaze

As for the stand, I just made the basic structure, and used black felt and hot glued it on.

——

And that’s about it.
It’s not too difficult, but …quite tedious.
Baking the parts separately was so that I could paint the overall piece better, and give off a cleaner finish.
Sometimes I underbaked the pieces, and adding too much pressure meant that I broke them.
Painting is always a pain since my acrylic paint likes to try kinda… sticky ? It attracts dust quite easily and it’s so painful to get a smooth coat without mixing it with water first…

Ah..

Anywho, maybe if it ever gets requested for my etsy, I’ll make another one and post up the process for that.

As for the next sculpture I’m working on, it’s Baby Groot !!
I have finished making him, and moving onto the painting process.

Hope to post those results soon.

Thanks for reading as usual,

-Cyn

Apologies,,

Hello again my readers ,,

As you know, I’ve been very slack in my update of this blog for the past (nearly) a year.
Looking at my posts, it’s been about 4 months since I last made anything at all.

I know I keep posting things like ” I’ll be back soon!” “Busy now , but crafting asap !” ,, but honestly, I don’t think I can anymore.

It’s not that I’m fully ditching this blog, but I feel like there isn’t anymore inspiration to craft anymore. I really haven’t touched my clay in a longlong time.
I think it’s because after starting this blog, I felt pressured to make things and update on a 4-5 day basis.

In the beginning, it was alright because I had holidays and there were so many rements I wanted to re-create and so many different fanart I wanted to make – but now that I’ve made most of the things I wanted to ,, I’m kind of slowing down on this crafting adventure..

So what am I saying?

Just apologizing for being away so long, and giving a heads up that you’ll probably see more long breaks like this one in the future.

I actually started university this year and I just know that I won’t have time to keep pumping out posts every 4-5 days like I did about a year ago.

So I’m not making any promises on this post, but I’ll definitely try to post maybe once every month? Orrr every two months ? Ah… this is getting difficult..

Again, it’s a lot easier if you have requests for me since I don’t have to go through this process of choosing what to make heh.

Also, I have a proper instagram now (not linked to my personal one)

@CraftCandies

If you search it up, you’ll actually see my latest creation which is this Yogurt Berry Smoothie ^^
I would post it here but my USB cable is faulty so I can’t transfer images from my phone at the moment.

So yep..

I’ll see you guys soon and hopefully I’ll have time to make proper tutorials for you again.

What I’ve been doing lately

Hello hello,

Just a brief update on what I’ve been making,,

Also, I’m open for custom requests as of today ^^
Just send me a message if you want one.

——-

New tools

Lately, I’ve been so in love with crafting sculptures with super sculpey that I’ve been feeling reluctant to work with all my normal clay. I think it’s because I can’t be bothered to working with such soft clay from studio sculpey and sculpey III. I still find that Fimo is okay to work with, but mostly just been crafting sculptures.

Above is wire that I bought from Daiso so I can incorporate more sturdy interiors for my sculptures. Up until now I’ve only been using foil – and occasionally  a small part of an eyepin for arms and such but now these wires can really help me stabilize my creations.

Also, I’ve started to watermark my images… can’t tell if I should create another one or just stick with this… what do you think ?

In addition to those materials, if you are just starting out I recommend you have the following:

Smooth work surface:
A lot of people use tiles, craft cutting boards or some sort of ceramic or glass surface. I use a small little ceramic plate that I found at my dollar store. That’s the stripey background you see a lot in my tutorials.

Pastels & Acrylic paint:
These are very important when you are making miniatures. The pastels will help you add that extra realistic detail you can’t achieve with polymer clay alone.
If you make sculptures then Acrylic paint is for painting your sculpture instead of using coloured sculpey which can get burnt or collect fingerprints/dust when you work on it a lot.

Tools:

-Needle Tool – At first you could use toothpicks and needles but please invest in a needle tool, it will save you a lot of time.
-Razor blade – I use long ones and short ones. Also invest in a precision razor blade tool
-Toothbrush – For texture
– Aluminium foil – You can use these for making the interior of clay sculptures or for textures
-Sand paper – Fine sandpaper so you can sand down creations
-Embossing tool / rounded tool – This is really helpful for blending or just sculpting in general
Molding putty  This is not necessarily needed but when you make things in bulk, this is helpful to have. Also you can use this to take texture from real life items and make the clay duplicate. This is quite expensive though( esp in New Zealand)
Wire – This is is only if you are thinking about making sculptures. This just allows you to create a more sturdy base structure
– Pliers – For cutting eyepins, shaping wire etc

So there we go

This is everything that I use when I craft and I’ll update as I find more helpful items ^^
