Pricing ?

Hello Hello,

So recently, I’ve been browsing around Etsy and such and for me, looking at some of the items and prices and I’m start to think about how I’ve been pricing things.
Sometimes, I see studs (polymer clay ones mind you) that probs cost less than $5 to make , sell for $20

Intense.
So now I’m thinking, am I pricing my creations wrong? Is it too cheap ? My Totoro bottle took about 4 hours to make (according to the time stamps  of the original images), and it takes even more material than those studs and I’m selling for $15 USD.
But at the same time, I know how hard making these are, and they do take a lot of time and skill and I guess that’s what make people sell them for that much
So then I decided to go and do some more research. I’ve done this before setting up my etsy, but I actually calculated everything this time:

See this article [Link], it’s Etsy’s page on how to price your creations.

Taking my Totoro bottle as an example:

Totoros

Materials:

  • Polymer Clay : About $2 ( considering I take small chunks off different colours)
  • Glass bottle: 80 cents
  • Packaging: 50 cents
  • Bubble wrap: 40 cents
  • Sellotape: Lol probs like 5 cents

Labour:

  • 4 hours ( according to online, should be the minimum wage of my country = $13.75)
  • = $55
  • After tax = 47.83

Expenses:

  • Etsy listing fee: 0.23 NZD
  • Etsy sale fee = 3.5% of sale price (assuming I sell at $15)

Profit:

  • Profit would be nice. Lol

= Wholesale x 2 (what does this mean? All those calculations x 2?)

  • If so : Adding all those previous ones = 52.33
  • x 2 = 104.66

=Retail
$ 104. 66

——

So. Assuming I did all the calculations correct, my glass bottles should sell for $104.66 , which is ridiculous.

——–

Let’s try another one [Link]

Time x $NZ minimum wage:

  • 4 hours * 13.75 = $55
  • After tax (15%) = $47.83 (2 dp)

+ 2(cost of materials) from the above calculations of materials + expenses
= 2(4.51)
= $ 9.02

x 1.1 =
= $9.91

Wholesale price (everything added together)
=$ 57.74

Retail = wholesale x 2
= $ 115.48

Okay, so this is even worse , $ 115.48

So what am I doing with my pricing? I honestly don’t know.

For me, I’ve always set the prices at the price I would pay for the creation.
Like, if I set my bottles at $30-50, I really don’t think anyone would pay for them. Adding the shipping overseas, the total cost for this 4cm glass bottle = $40-60 USD.

I honestly don’t think I would end up selling anything at all. The listings that I put up cost me 0.20 USD each and expire I think after 3 or 4 months. If no one buys anything, then that just means more of a loss for me.
And also, I guess I’m just not too worried about gaining any profit because most of these creations are just made as my hobby. Since I’ve started crafting with polymer clay, I have spend hundreds on materials alone (up to now) and I never really kept track of all my expenses (which I should do – but hey I was 14 at the time).

Can you tell I’m really confused right now ?
Also, I’m pretty sure a lot of people don’t follow those (above) methods to a T.

What do I dooooooo ????

I’ll end this post here because I actually have this thing due for school tomorrow.

Etsy !!

Hey guys !

Two posts in a day ohoho

Anyways, this is a little off track but I thought I’d update with how my Etsy was going.

I don’t really know what to do with it tbh, I haven’t made a lot of a new things to put in it  and I’m always wondering if people will buy stuff at all.

That’s why I only have about 7 or 8 listings up at the moment. huhu

First Sale !

Hey guys !

Double post in day woo !
I’m just so excited right now… I made my first sale ! ^^
And they were on the items I thought were the least popular,,

Heart cheesecakesAlice in wonderland

The heart shaped cheese cakes and the (Alice in wonderland) White rabbit mont-blancs.

But yes ^^
Very surprising !

Anyway, I’m waiting for the payment to clear so I can ship it off.

Packaging

Here is my packaging.
I bubble wrapped all the charms together and put them in this cute gift bag.
As a bonus of my first sale, I added a plush that I made ^^ (tutorial anyone ? )

I hope to include a plush for the first 5 sales that I made ohoho,,
I really hope my packaging is sufficient enough though… I’ll be mailing it in a bubble envelope so hopefully nothing will break. u.u ;;

Cross your fingers !

Thanks for reading again !

Etsy + Update

Hey guys !

Logo

I finallllllyy have my Etsy store sorted ^^
I had already signed up for a longggg time, and then screwed something up – resulting in me deleting my account……

Now my new account has settled for “CraftCandiess”….. ahhhh
Its okay though, you guys know who I am right ? ^^

As soon as I got home, I tried to think of ideas for my banner….
Do you like this one ? I think the only reason why I held off Etsy for so long was because I didn’t really have a theme or idea to work with. I finally pushed myself today and got it done.
It’s quite simple right ? I don’t really know what other designs to do atm.

Anyway, if you have anything you want to see in my store, please comment here, or email me for a custom order .

Now for updates :D

A couple of weeks ago I went to my favourite Japanese store ^^ We have two stores in Auckland (that I know of), that sells any three items  in the store for $10.
It’s my favourite place….. imagine how awesome it would be to live in Japan haha.

The last time I went, I found some paper and clay- and oh my life.
It is amazing. It is so soft it feels like marshmellows….

But I think I only downside to paper clay is that, it’s not that good to work with if you’re doing detailed work. It dries as you work and since I’m slow, it’s not that ideal.
Paper clay is also quite hard to blend.

Although, keep in mind that I’m only talking about my particular brand:

Paper Clay

Its not even anything popular like hearty clay. This is probably one of the lower quality paper clays, but it’s still okay (Y).
I just wanted to know how workable it was ^^;;

Also in the image, notice I finally have a rolling pin !
In all my years of crafting, I have never had a rolling pin (until now ofc). I’ve always been using random things like pens, glue sticks – just anything cylinder shaped to help me roll out my clay.
I needed to get three things so I bought two packs of the clay and the rolling pin ,, so happy…

On my second visit to town, I bought some more wahaha,,
This time, I bought a mini storage box for my crafts, some tags and these metal pans(?) that are used for mixing paint in. Since they looked so much like pie bases, I’m going to use them for exactly that ^^

Craftbox

As you can see, I have stored in here:

  • Tags (For attaching to gifts)
  • Ribbon for felt creations
  • A couple of Glass bottles ( I didn’t have room for 8 more)
  • My key chain straps
  • Eyepins
  • Ring bases
  • Jump rings
  • And you can’t see it, but the pie bases

This box is quite useful in that, you can make the spaces as big as you want. If you can see, next to the tags are these pink dividers. You can put them wherever you like.

It’s the weekend tomorrow and I hope to create a couple of crafts for you guys.

Please be waiting ! I’m sorry I haven’t been uploading as much..

Question ?

Hello Hello,,

So recently, I’ve been thinking about opening at Etsy store. I’ve been making all these charms for the tutorials, and a lot of the time, they’re just sitting around.
The only problem is, I don’t know how many people are willing to buy my charms, and how to calculate the shipping costs o___o.

(Why is the website so poorly made ?)

If any has any experience with selling overseas, please pm me T___T.

I looked online at NZ’s post rate finder, and the “parcel” part of it is ridiculously expensive…
I have no idea how to package and ship my items out. I worked out that in NZ, shipping would cost roughly $3.30, so that’s okay.

Im just concerned about the international part of it… should I make it so that I can just post it into the mail box ? Or should I make it into a small-ish box and send it through my post office ?

=.= ;;;

I still need to think this through,,
